Malawi Government has revised the statutory minimum wage from K317 to
K551 per day. This should be good news for low earners working in
factories, security companies as well as domestic workers who have been
crying over the past two years for the minimum wage to be adjusted
upwards.
The development means that a worker working 30 days of the month will now be earning a minimum of K16, 530 from K9, 510. A statement from the Ministry of Labour released yesterday says the new minimum wage applies without exception to all sectors of the economy and in all areas.
“Employers are reminded that, in terms of section 55 of the Employment Act, cap 55.01, it is an offence to pay an employee a wage that is below the prescribed statutory minimum wage,” reads the stamen in part.
For a long time now there has been an outcry from the different sectors and individuals for government to raise the minimum wage.
