I attended the Annual Forum hosted by the Initiative for Global Development where the Director of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) discussed how Malawi has done well in implementing the MCC Compact. He praised Malawi for having successfully implemented the project, claiming it has improved the provision of electricity in our country and led to the attraction of significant investment into Malawi.
I was shocked to hear these words of praise and admiration, while we see Malawian babies dying in incubators. Our shops are empty and not stocking frozen foods. Patients cannot receive medical operations. Companies are scaling down production and laying us off. Malawians have never experienced the challenges we are now facing as a result of prolonged blackouts. Hearing the MCC director sing these songs of praise, I know that our partners are fed lies.
It is simple to provide basic services such as water and electricity, but solving the challenges starts with acknowledging that we have a severe problem on our hands. We must remain apolitical, and Malawian leadership must concentrate on engaging those with proposed solutions as quickly as possible.
